Gay Casting Industry

Gay actors on casting are still battling discrimination in Hollywood. Many still do not feel welcome in the industry, and some still get thrown off audition by agents because of their sexual orientation.

There is still a lot of hostility towards gay people in the industry, but attitudes are changing slowly with time. Early on, particularly during the AIDS era, there were a lot more “queer” people in the business who were often shunned by the industry for their sexuality.

Nowadays, there are more gay casting executives who are giving gay actors more chances to play characters that traditionally go to the roles of the straight characters. Many of the “mainstream” roles that you see played by a wide range of actors including the likes of Bruce Willis, James Bond, and Will Smith, have come about through gay talent and representation.

Early on in career too, there were more gay executives and gay casting individuals who were often the least unlikely to allow a gay actor to play a role that a straight person would normally play.

There is still a lot of movement and change within Hollywood. One of the most notable actors to come out as a gay character recently is Drew Barrymore. Who plays the character of Cleopatra in the new film The Mask. There are more roles being offered to gay men. And this is only going to continue to grow.

In the meantime, gay people in Hollywood are fighting for equal representation. In all facets of the film industry.

When the doors to the major roles are finally open. They will be greeted with open arms, with love, and with the confidence to love themselves just like everyone else.
